22nd Oct, 2024 - Last night we proved far too strong for The Northern, even given the late withdrawal of Jonah Bryant with a fever. We have such a strong squad, that we were able to call upon Sam Osborne-Wylde who could step in at short notice to replace him at No.1. Things looked ominous for The Northern when the very first game of the night went our way 11-0! Lewis Doughty was totally dominating Matt Roberts(below). This…
15th Oct, 2024 - Normality resumed last night as our first team beat Neston, 20-0. Emily started the night off well by winning the all-female match-up. Every game was point-for-point until 7-all, where Emily would use her superior skill and experience to see out the last few points. Her opponent, Rachel Chadwick did look impressive for large parts of the match, and if Neston can keep her at No.5 this season, they will have a lot of wins down…
9th Oct, 2024 - Last night was a truly spectacular night of squash, albeit a disappointing one from a result point of view. The atmosphere at Liverpool squash club was electric, with over one hundred squash fans from all over the north west, packed in to see these 10 world class squash players go head-to-head. Before the match, nobody knew which team would come away with the win, with all 5 match-ups too tight to predict. …
1st Oct, 2024 - Grove Park were our unlucky visitors last night. Grove are a great team and likely going to be in the top three at the end of the season, but they were still no match for our awesomeness! First on the show court we had Sam Osbourne-Wylde up against Will Salter (below). After impressing all of the early crowd with his impressive solo practicing, Will just didn't have enough to regularly trouble Sam, with our…
24th Sep, 2024 - It felt amazing to be back playing another season at our wonderful Warrington show court. We have a several new faces in our squad this season, and two were making their Warrington league debut last night, Sam Osbourne Wylde and Josh Owen. League newcomers Fairways Lodge were our opponents. They cruised the second division last season, with a winning margin of over 60 points. First on the show court was Josh Owen…
17th Sep, 2024 - Some fabulous squash was played in the pre-season friendly with Liverpool. First up was last year's Player of the Season, Lewis Doughty against Liverpool regular Cory Harding (top & below). Lewis looked in great form. His shots were consistently tight and a good length which restrained his opponent. Cory played better than the score line suggests but Lewis ran out the winner 3-0. On the other court, new signing Josh Owen took on the older Harding brother, Lewis.…
23rd Jul, 2024 - The final match of this year's Club Championship was the Men's Open competition with youngster George Harry taking on his team mate Dave Williams. George was a bit too strong for Dave who was appearing in his second final this year. The cup was presented by Norman Asbury.
31st May, 2024 - Three more finals were completed of Friday night. First on was Ian Tennent vs Mark Perry. Ian's victory in the Over 55's left Mark exhausted at the end. But he recovered to put a smile on for the presentation. Over 55's Champion Ian Tenant Next on was Peter Astbury vs Dave Williams. Peter's shots were just too good for the hard chasing opponent. Over 45's Champion Peter Astbury Finally, it was the turn of…
26th May, 2024 - It was a big day on Sunday at the National Squash Centre where the Manchester Open were being held. Before the finals, Warrington took on Grove Park in the NWCSL Division 1 Cup competition on the two all-glass show courts. On the side courts were the play-off for the other divisions. Grove Park were the current holders of the Division 1 trophy but struggled to get their best team out this time around. Warrington was…
23rd Apr, 2024 - Last Tuesday, Warrington comfortably overcame Bowdon to reach the final of the Division One Cup. The evening began with me stepping on court for the first time since my hip replacement at Christmas (Below). I was playing the potentially tricky and 'flicky' Nick Murrills. After a horrendous 3 rallies where I smashed 2 shots in the tin and then fell over as I embarrassingly tried to change direction - I quickly remembered how to…
16th Apr, 2024 - Warrington completed a comfortable quarter-final victory against Alderley Edge on Tuesday night. Everyone won 3-0, with the exception of Ollie Hudson, who played despite a severely locked back. Even given the awful pain he was in, he still found himself 2-0 up, but eventually succumbed to his injury and retired after the 4th game. It's always nice to see James Earles in the house, and we will all be treated by his…
26th Mar, 2024 - Last night was truly a time to celebrate for Warrington. Our ladies 1st team had gained promotion to the first division the night before, in the most dramatic of circumstances. That afternoon our adopted son, Jonah Bryant became the first Englishman to win 2 European Junior Championships in a row. Our men's team had officially won the league the week before by beating Grove Park, but this was our time to really celebrate with our…
26th Mar, 2024 - The Cheshire Ladies Squash League The ladies had their final match of the season last night at home. It was a nail biter… They’ve been top of the league for most of the season but since Christmas Heswall has been hot on their heels. Heswall has had some lucky walkovers and weak teams up against them recently, which meant last week they went 8 points ahead
19th Mar, 2024 - WARRINGTON ARE CHAMPIONS! Grove Park fielded their strongest team of the season with all three of their super-stars turning out against us, trying their best to delay the title-winning party. Their line-up was Emyr Evans, Temwa Chileshe, Dewald van Nierkerk, Luke McFarland and Ky Hibberd. We had Joel Makin, Ben Smith, Lewis Doughty, Ollie Hudson and Emily Whitlock. Much of the night was taken up with the Dewald vs Lewis match, as both…
12th Mar, 2024 - Warrington had a nice outing against Liverpool. Liverpool beat us in the first half of the season, but a repeat was not to be as an in-form Adrain Waller and Jonah Bryant led the line. Even-though Liverpool's local-lad Lewis Harding lost 3-0 to Jonah, it was one of the best I've ever seen Lewis play (Below) And speaking of best performances, Lewis Doughty was absolutely flawless against Cory Harding,…
5th Mar, 2024 - The night was the big title-deciding showdown between defending 7-time champions Warrington, and worthy challengers Cheetham Hill. The crowd was filled to the rafters, as 150 people crammed themselves into the Warrington squash arena, anticipating a terrific night of squash - and that is exactly what they got. During the introductions, it was clearly obvious why these two teams are competing at the top of the table - the records of all the regulars are impeccable.…
27th Feb, 2024 - On Tuesday night Warrington First team cruised to a 5-0 win against The Northern 2. At 1 for us was Simon 'Sherbert' Herbert. As always, the stringy entertainer was amazing to watch as he beat Ali Khawas 3-0 (Below). Crowd favourite, James 'The Bricklayer' Earles scraped through a tricky encounter against Bader Almaghrebi (Below). The second game was huuuuge for Earlsey, as he saved 3 game balls to prevent going 2-0 down.…
21st Feb, 2024 - Warrington had a comfortable night as they beat the ever-likable Wigan Warriors 5-0, collecting the full 20 points on offer. Portuguese hunkster Rui Soares and Ben 'The Grimsby Grenade' Smith proved too good at No's 1 and 2. Rui & Mason Ben & Ben Wigan legend Ryan Atherton, notorious for his backhand flicks that we've all been fooled by at one time or another, couldn't find any joy…
6th Feb, 2024 - Warrington travelled to the Welsh Dragons of Wrexham, and satisfyingly picked up 19 points. It always helps when we're armed with World No.9 Joel Makin, and teenage sensation, Jonah Bryant. However, it was certainly not plain sailing. Lewis Doughty was first on against World Top 10 Tesni Murphy (Evans). Lewis was feeling fatigued after a trip to Ireland at the weekend, followed by two very long days in Birmingham doing his level 3 coaching…
31st Jan, 2024 - Warrington enjoyed a straight-forward(ish) win against Alderley Edge last night. Bolstered by World No.9 superstar Joel Makin, and young prodigy Johan Bryant, we knew we had the chance of a 5-0 victory. Lewis Doughty has been looking more aggressive in his style of squash in the last few weeks (Below). He started us off with an impressive 3-0 win against a potentially dangerous Azhan Khan. Azhan can hit some outrageous winners, but Lewis…
28th Jan, 2024 - Warrington convincingly beat Bowdon last night, however Samuel Ince-Carvalhal slightly dampened our party as he put in a sublime performance to beat Ollie Hudson 3-1. After losing the first two games, Ollie looked like he was staging a comeback by winning the third game, but unfortunately severe cramps in his left leg put a stop to any further hopes he had. Jonah kicked us off with a 'cruise control' but still remarkably impressive performance,…
21st Jan, 2024 - Warrington first team enjoyed a very straight-forward start to 2024 with an easy win over The Northern First team 20-0. Adrian Waller was as accurate as ever and Simon Herbert was in exhibition mode as they dominated their opponents. Lewis was unwavering like always in his dominance at the number three position, and confidence boosting wins for Ollie and Charlie saw us claim all 20 points before 9.00pm. Next week we head to Bowdon where we…
12th Dec, 2023 - This week we travelled to The Ethiad Stadium to play City Of Manchester. Another straightforward 20 points for us, where Emily was especially ruthless in despatching her opponent, not even dropping a point in the last game! She clearly had some frustration to release after 3 weeks on the sidelines through injury. As always, it was nice to have James Earles playing for us. His style of play always makes him very popular with the…
5th Dec, 2023 - Our home match against Grove Park was pretty straightforward, claiming a 20-0 victory, where Rui in particular looked impressively slick against a very good, Joel Makin-esqe opponent in Will Salter (below). We needed a good result after two defeats in a row. However, this match was most notable for the fantastic food provided in the bar for everyone. There were pigs in blankets, ham and a deliciously succulent turkey…
30th Nov, 2023 - Liverpool put in a massive performance to disrupt the top of the table standings. They unfortunately beat us in an electric night of squash. We were quickly on our way as Lewis Doughty got the better of his name counterpart, Lewis Harding (top and above), while younger Harding brother Cory, was in a battle on the other court against his coach, me! Cory’s tins kept limpy old me in the match…
25th Nov, 2023 - Cheetham Hill frustratingly beat us 4-1 to delight their home crowd. The evening started off with club captain Josh, thrashing a hampered Ollie Hudson, quickly followed by Northern Irish champion Stephen Hearst, returning to form with an equally convincing 3-0 against an out-of-sorts Charlie Cowie, who was stepping in for our injured Emily (below). Meanwhile on the show-court, Nick Wall and Adrian Waller outlasted both the side-court matches, as they battled it out in…
16th Nov, 2023 - We cruised to a 5-0 victory last night, with the only stern test coming for Rui at No.1. Rui was up against Ali Khawas, who is a very Egyptian Egyptian! He plays typically of what we have become used to watching these players on the TV. He fires the ball into the front of the court, without any fear what-so-ever. Rui struggled for rhythm and it became a battle for our Portuguese superstar. Rui…
8th Nov, 2023 - Tuesday was Warrington's first really tough test of the season, and I'm delighted to report that we passed with flying colours. Wigan is always a pleasant place to go to. Their die-hard supporters always cram themselves into every possible crevice in order to watch world class squash, and there was plenty of that on display with 3 of the best players on the planet turning out for their clubs. First up was some…
2nd Nov, 2023 - Warrington first team completed a comfortable victory against Wrexham Brymbo on Tuesday night. There was no Halloween upset, no tricks, but all treats for our faithful supporters. We reversed the playing order on the show court as Owain Taylor had to dash off to the airport! We put the number ones on first. Adrian Waller and Owain played out the closest match of the evening (below). Owain is much better than his World Ranking…
18th Oct, 2023 - As we head into the half term break, our first team notched up another 5-0 victory, meaning in our three matches so far we've earned 59 points from a possible 60. Last night we travelled to Alderley Edge. Our top order players of Rui, Simon and Lewis made very quick work of their opponents, all winning 3-0 and all looking very impressive. Rui in particular, made a very good player look ordinary as he…
12th Oct, 2023 - On Tuesday evening we had a convincing 5-0 home win against Bowdon. Crowd favourite James Earles started the night off on the show court. He was up against youngster Charles Keeble (above). This was a perfect match for our Bald Assassin to use his full repertoire of skills. Charles is a good player but relies on hurrying his opponents and hoping they will make mistakes. James was far too controlled and classy,…
4th Oct, 2023 - Warrington begun their title defence with a decent 4-1 victory away at The Northern. We started our campaign a week later than every other team, so we're already playing catch-up! The evening started with The Northern getting off to a flying start. Magg Wagg and third year Manchester Uni student Josh Morris both went 2-0 up against myself and Charlie. Almost like we were mirroring each other on the adjacent courts, we…
14th Sep, 2023 - Last Tuesday Warrington hosted a truely wonderful night of exhibition squash. Courtesy of our ever generous sponsor and supporter Alan Edge of EWL Logistics, we were able to offer two absolutely world class exhibition matches free-of-charge. There was plenty of excitement in the crowd at the prospect of seeing three new players at our club, two of which are dubbed by their coach Rob Owen (coach to Paul Coll) as 'two superstars of…
31st Aug, 2023 - Warrington Sports Club, with kind support from our ever loyal sponsors EWL, are absolutely delighted to be hosting an exhibition evening of the highest quality on the 5th September. This squash exhibition features 4 world class players, including two new Warrington first team recruits for the coming 2023/24 NWCSL season. The evening will begin with our ever-familiar superstar Emily Whitlock, up against the fast rising 20 year-old, Katie Malliff. Emily has reached a high…
30th Mar, 2023 - Rui to the Rescue! Warrington travelled to a Liverpool needing just two points to win their 6th league title in a row - somewhat of a formality most would assume - this couldn't have been more wrong! Liverpool had a strong line-up with both George Parker and Lwamba available. With all of our 'Big Guns' available; Joel Makin, Adrian Waller, Rui Soares and Ben Smith. However, Joel needed a rest after his brutal schedule of…
21st Mar, 2023 - Warrington win the crunch match - just! In my opinion, last night was the greatest spectacle I've ever witnessed in North West Counties Squash - and that's going back 30 years! It was a top of the table clash, in an almost winner-takes-all scenario and the squash quality, atmosphere and excitement more than lived up to the massive occasion. It felt pretty bonkers at times being there and revelling in this electric night! Cheetham Hill…
16th Mar, 2023 - Last night Warrington claimed a 5-0 away win over The Northern 1. First up was the peg-leg Andy Whipp taking on Matt Wagg (Below). Andy, still struggling to reach all 4 corners of the court, played a steady patient game and was rewarded with mistakes from Matt. As each of the first two games approached the finish line, Andy had the edge and pulled out a 2-game lead. Matt won the next game, but that…
8th Mar, 2023 - Warrington completed a comfortable night against Wrexham last night and importantly extended our lead at the top of the table to 13 points - but Cheetham Hill did scrape through for an impressive 3-2 win against 3rd placed Liverpool, with youngster Jonah Bryant coming up with the goods for them to claim the victory. Also in that match, Liverpool youngster Cory Harding continued his impressive second half of the season by convincingly beating Cheetham's…
1st Mar, 2023 - Warrington claimed an entertaining win over a spirited Alderley Edge last night, to move 11 points ahead at the top of the league. Alderley have struggled this season but put out their strongest team to give the crowd some great matches. Pickles and I played out an entertaining 14-12 in the fifth match, with James playing some inspired squash to couple with his trademark running. Mike Potter is also returning to…
22nd Feb, 2023 - Warrington beat a spirited Wigan 3-2, to claim valuable points in the title race. Joel Makin made light work of New Zealander Mason Smales. I'd never seen Mason Smales play before - he reminded me of a young Del Harris. Very cocked technique. Unfortunately though Joel was too accurate and fast, leaving Mason wondering what he had to do to win a point against the in-form Welshman. Wigan coach Julian put up a…
9th Feb, 2023 - Bollington put up a great fight for their home fans. Lewis Doughty played some nice squash to take the first game from his considerably higher ranked opponent. The second was controlled by Rui, but then the crazily hot courts started to have an effect on the Portuguese superstar. He began to feel a bit dizzy, but certainly didn't show it as his demeanour on court is always calm and un-flustered. Rui kept his 'cool'…
6th Feb, 2023 - Warrington completed the expected win against The Northern 2nd Team on Tuesday. All the matches were fairly straight-forward, with the biggest fight coming from Jules Abbas. Fresh from his confidence boosting win last week against Matt Lowrey, he gave Rob Taylor a real run for his money. Rob definitely looked fatigued as the match went on, while Jules continued to fling himself around the court. In the end, Rob had a bit too much accuracy…
26th Jan, 2023 - Warrington beat Grove park on Tuesday with some great performances. Emily was just a bit too accurate for Yawar, controlling the backhand side extremely well, always squeezing the masters legend into difficult positions (Below). She lifted well and attacked well, so Yawar could never spend enough time in the middle where he was able to stamp his authority on the match. Luke fired in far too many hard low…
13th Jan, 2023 - Warrington scraped through against a strong Bowdon side as we saw fist division squash start up again after the Christmas break. James Connor made his Warrington first team debut, and unfortunately it ended quite quickly. After a promising first game where he dictated a lot of the rallies with his silky skills, he could not sustain the fight as he's played very little squash at that level over the last year, after…
15th Dec, 2022 - We had a superb end to the first half with a 5-0 victory over title rivals Liverpool, the perfect way to get over our first defeat for 3 years last week. This win keep the mighty Warrington 7 points clear at the top of the table as we hit the half way stage. Liverpool were unlucky as they had their number 3 Connor Sheen drop out with Covid, meaning the Harding bros jumped…
8th Dec, 2022 - Cheetham Hill score a massive upset against Warington - who hadn't lost since before Covid! This was a bad night for Warrington against the Cheetham Hill posse. Before the match we were confident of a 3-2 win, with wins seemingly assured at 1, 2 and 5. Stephen Hearst had other ideas. Emily, who always plays superbly for us, had her only ever off night - which of course she's allowed one from time to…
2nd Dec, 2022 - Warrington have now forged an 11 point lead over Cheetham Hill at the top of the league, with a 4-1 win over The Northern. I started off the night with a brief outing before being forced to retire with my ongoing, debilitating hip-flexor issues. Rob Taylor made quick work of Garth at no.5 in a repeat of their match a few days before in The Cheshire Closed (above). The Cheshire Closed also saw our Sam…
24th Nov, 2022 - We travelled to Wrexham this week. I've never been to the Brymbo squash club before. It seems like an enthusiastic little club and hopefully they're enjoying their time in the top division and will be a permanent fixture in division one for the foreseeable future. Unfortunately for the Welsh club they were without top string Owain Taylor who was on PSL duty. This made it a tough challenge from the get-go, especially as we…
19th Nov, 2022 - 15th November Warrington beat Alderley Edge, but not without a few scares! Notable matches were numbers 1,2 and 3, all on the show court. Tom Bamford played the best I've ever seen him play, hitting three-wall boasts in the nick for fun - much to James' frustration. Earlsey was struggling for form and not hitting his back corners at all, but Bamf was superb, but... I did get the sense at 2-0 up,…
11th Nov, 2022 - At midday on Tuesday, Wigan vs Warrington looked like an awesome match-up. Pat Rooney vs Joel. Awesome 16-year-old Abdallah vs James Earles. Coach Julian vs Coach 'Me'. Club Champ / North-West Legend Ryan vs Ladies World No 20 Emily. By late afternoon on Tuesday it had unfortunately all gone pear shaped for Wigan. Abdullah dropped out injured, and then World No.20 Pat withdrew with a knee injury. Wigan all-of-a-sudden faced a brutal uphill…
22nd Oct, 2022 - NWCSL The Northern 2 v Warrington Well, The Northern 2 put up a wonderful fight. The 5-0 score-line doesn't tell half the story with The Northern being 2-0 up on both courts at the same time at one stage. Firstly I'll say, I've never seen a match night with so many cross-court nicks, and all coming from the boys in green. Some of the shots were outrageous! I started off the night against George.…
19th Oct, 2022 - NWCSL The Northern 2 v Warrington Well, The Northern 2 put up a wonderful fight.
27th Sep, 2022 - NWCSL Match 1 27.09.2022Warrington beat Bowdon 4-1 Stu MacGregor vs Joel Makin 6/11 3/11 11/7 6/11Charles Keeble vs Ben Smith 4/11 9/11 6/11Pete Billson vs Andy Whipp 9/11 3/11 6/11Ameel Talib vs Emily Whitlock 9/11 9/11 2/11Matt Lowery vs Sam Wileman 11/5 10/12 11/4 11/5 Wasn't it wonderful to have the first division matches back playing for another season?! Bowdon were running their Club Night before the first team players took the stage, so the…
17th Mar, 2022 - NWCSL 1st Team Match Report 12 Away to Alderley Edge, 2nd March 2022 Last night saw the weakest Warrington line-up of the season, having to call upon 3 fringe first / second team players - but man oh man - did they perform for us! Desperate to maintain our unbeaten season and clinch the title, we had to really fight to achieve that. James Earles played Adam Turner at number 2. Both superbly strong number…
18th Mar, 2022 - NWCSL 1st Team Match Report 14 Away to Grove Park 15th March 2022 Tuesday saw the final matches of the season for the NWCSL First Division - featuring an epic battle between current champions Warrington vs previous champions, Grove Park. The line-ups were always going to provide some incredibly juicy matches. We all know about Warrington's immense and exciting squad they can regularly call upon with the likes of Joel Makin, James Willstrop, Adrian Waller…
